What Click Fraud Means for Traffic Analysis

Click fraud is intentional invalid interaction with paid traffic intended to create cost, manipulate metrics, or imitate genuine interest.

Invalid traffic is broader than deliberate fraud

Accidental double taps, tracking retries, previews, crawlers, and integration defects can inflate click records without fraudulent intent. Analysts should separate observed invalid behavior from claims about motive unless evidence supports that conclusion.

Common patterns require context

Rapid repetition, impossible travel, uniform timing, inconsistent browser data, suspicious placements, or missing downstream activity can justify investigation. Shared networks and campaign mechanics can also produce some of these patterns, so combinations matter more than isolated anomalies.

Count at consistent points in the journey

Ad-platform clicks, router events, tracker visits, sessions, and conversions measure different stages. Reconciliation starts by defining each counter and matching stable identifiers rather than assuming unequal totals prove abuse.

Narrow the response to supported evidence

Teams may exclude a placement, rate limit a pattern, adjust allow or deny controls, dispute traffic with a source, or monitor a segment more closely. Preserve raw examples and the configuration version before making a broad policy change.

Verify that mitigation changes the intended segment

Compare the affected source, placement, device, network, and time window before and after intervention. Also inspect neighboring legitimate segments for collateral loss and remove emergency rules that no longer have a documented basis.
